Neuropathy, also known as peripheral neuropathy, refers to a condition that affects the health of peripheral nerves. Ideally, peripheral nerves are a special group of nerve endings that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body. This group of nerves is composed of three types of nerves, which include sensory nerves, motor nerves, and autonomic nerves. Neuropathy results when the health a peripheral nerve is compromised. This condition can affect a single type of nerve or a combination of different nerves.
Who Is at Risk?
It is worth noting that people of all ages are at risk of neuropathy. Older people, however, are at a higher risk than young adults and kids. Statistics also show that it is more common among men and Caucasians. Notably, it is estimated that at least 25% of the population are at risk of showing neuropathy related symptoms with more than 50% of people with diabetes at risk of being affected by neuropathy.
Causes of Neuropathy
There are many reasons why some people are at risk of being affected by neuropathy. In most cases, the major causes can be acquired or hereditary. Here are some of the leading causes of neuropathy.
Hereditary Causes
Neuropathy can be hereditary. Charcot-Marie Tooth (CMT) is the primary type of hereditary neuropathy which affects both the sensory and motor nerves. This condition is characterized by weakness in the leg and foot muscles. Deformities can also result in extreme cases, which make it difficult for the affected individual to walk or maintain body balance.
Acquired Neuropathy
As the name suggests, this type of neuropathy develops after birth. It is caused by traumatic life experiences, infections in the nervous systems, medications and poisons, system ailments, and vascular disorder. Drug addiction can also place one at risk of suffering from this condition. It is also worth noting that some causes of neuropathy might not be determined. Undetermined neuropathy is referred to as idiopathic neuropathy in medical terms. 
Neuropathy Treatment
The first step in treating neuropathy is making a diagnosis, which involves looking at patients history and conducting a thorough examination. A diagnosis seeks to help the doctor identify the affected nerves. Treatment and management of this condition can involve using medication, physical therapy, alternative medicine such as acupuncture, or even surgery.
